Articles that talk about banned books

The Messages We Miss: Banned Books, Censored Texts, and Citizenship.
The purpose of this qualitative research study was to describe preservice teachers' views on the use of banned or censored texts and taboo topics in the classroom. The study sought to discern how elementary and secondary teacher candidates enrolled in methods courses at a Midwestern university thought about issues of censorship, citizenship, and curricular materials they may or may not decide to use. The study found that, when introduced to banned and censored texts related to citizenship, teacher candidates conceptually appreciated the notion of exploring controversial citizenship issues with students.
Rise to the Challenge.
The article discusses the issues brought by Banned Books Week and how librarians can make sure the Banned Books message is not lost or misconstrued. Topics include a study published in the July 2019 issue of "The Library Quarterly" that questioned whether the public was clear about the fact that the American Library Association (ALA) does not ban book, background on the Banned Books Week, and reason that many librarians are self-censoring.
Up to the Challenge: Dealing with school library book challenges before they happen.
The author discusses ways library personnel can prepare for and manage school library book challenges or complaints. Topics include the importance of educating library personnel with the school library standards and the district's process for handling reconsiderations of school library material, several books that have been banned in certain communities due to offensive language or sensitive issues, and use of the American Library Association (ALA) Coping with Challenges document.
