Biography as a Literary Form

Autobiographies are the subject's self-authored story of their own life. These are often nonfiction, but can be written in literary forms that rely upon prose techniques.

Biographies are nonfiction accounts of a person's life by someone other than the subject. These are often factual accounts, but can be written as narratives.

Memoirs are a form of autobiography. They are considered a form of popular literature because the subject is often a public figure. While these types of books can be complete autobiographies, they usually focus on a person's significant accomplishments or unique experiences and are written in first-person.

Collective biographies are accounts of the lives of a group of people. The goal of these texts are to describe multiple perspectives on the same time period or describe their combined efforts towards a common goal.
