Explore your topic

  • Assess your understanding of the subject
  • Determine what knowledge is needed for
    • you, the researcher
    • your audience, the reader

If you need to learn more about your topic, start gathering background knowledge with the goal of getting different perspectives on the issues. Try to get an overview of the subject. Make a list of key concepts and important facts or people. Use reference materials like dictionaries and encyclopedias.

If you already have a topic identified or assigned, start thinking about how you're going to research it. Decide what type of information/ data you need and how to collect or create it. Consider using reading strategies to help you navigate the research material.
