Researching with Government Information

blue GovInfo logo

GovInfo is the official home of federal publications. Search this site for collections, publications, other resources, and external partner sites. Maintained by the Government Publishing Office (GPO).

Cressman Library has a wide range of digital and physical resources. For best results, used the advanced search options. In the Author field, specify a governmental agency or department. Although legislators may sponsor bills or authorize reports, it is unlikely that a proper name will generate results. In the Subject field, limit your results to Government Documents. For more search tips, check out our Researching LibGuide

Government Reports
Government reports are a good source for finding policy recommendations, project summaries, and understanding data in context. Explore reports from the Congressional Research Service here.

Government Publications

Some government agencies provide information in the form of their own publications. These can be found in the Cressman library catalog.  In the Format field, select Journals and Magazines. The central resource for federal information is the Government Publishing Office. The main daily publication of the United States government is the Federal Register.

Web Resources

Searching online is also a great way to find government information. However, it is important to evaluate your sources well, especially the sites of candidates and politicians. Check out our Evaluating Online Sources LibGuide for more help. A general rule to follow is that government-sponsored websites can be identified by .gov or .org for smaller public institutions.
